To be a Good Writer
It takes a certain amount of finesse.
Anyone could write.
Anyone could type words on a computer, write words on a page or even speak their words into a recording that can transcribe their thoughts.
However, this doesn't mean they can write well.
As I read William Zinsser's "On Writing Well" and the Module 4 readings, a big theme I noticed is writing takes work. As Donnel King wrote in the first sentence of his article "Writing for (not by) the Ear," he made the simple point, "People don't write the way they talk."
It's true.
There are many techniques to writing that people may or may not realize. Here is a list of a few that make writers good at speaking to their readers:
Word Choice
Notice in my second sentence I wrote "Anyone could write." This is because anyone could write, but it doesn't mean anyone can write a final product that many readers will be engaged in or enjoy.
It's crucial to make every word matter. Not only does writing concisely contribute to this, but also choices in your words.
For example, in chapter 10 of "On Writing Well," Zinsser lists 'bits and pieces' that are crucial to writing. One piece of advice he gives is to use active verbs.
"The difference between an active verb style and a passive-very style—in clarity and vigor—is the difference between life and death for a writer." - ziNSSER 67
The use of active verbs helps add a punch to giving sentences momentum and strong visualization.
On the contrary, Zinsser says the use of adverbs are unnecessary as they clutter sentences and annoy the reader.
Present Tense
Another important way to engage a reader is by using the present tense, according to King. It's also important to remember that consistency is key, so when using present tense, stick with the present tense.
Short Sentences
As mentioned earlier, it's important to keep sentences concise and easy to read. By eliminating unnecessary words and cutting to the chase, readers will better listen to the writer and stay engaged.
The Takeaway
Overall, it's important for writers to understand how to connect with their readers and keep their interest. It's also important for writers to write what they're passionate about in their own voice.
"Within the broad rule of not letting the reader get away, all writers must approach their subject in a manner that most naturally suits what they are writing about and who they are." - Zinsser 62
Through writing in a way that's simple and to the point, anyone can write well and engage their readers.
